On May 17, 1992, under the leadership of Mid-Atlantic Regional Director Maxine Black, 16 women chartered a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in the New River Valley. The first programs of the Chapter included work at the Women’s Resource Center, Adopt a Family, and the establishment of the scholarship program. The Clementine Hansley-Hurt Scholarship was named for our first Tau Mu Omega Ivy Beyond the Wall, who died in October of 1992.

Today, the Tau Mu Omega Chapter is comprised of a mix of sorors. The Chapter has a large population of Sorors who are currently enrolled in and pursuing Master degrees and doctoral programs as well as sorors living and working in the New River Valley. The programs of the Chapter include the annual Mother’s Day Luncheon, the Cotillion Scholarship Program, sponsoring a children from the Christmas Angel Tree, and the AKA Loves the Family Barbecue. The Tau Mu Omega Chapter continues to be “a service to all mankind.” Valuing the ideals as set by our Founders and following in the footsteps of those women who wanted to continue to foster sisterhood and service in the New River Valley.
